Solid Rubber Elastomeric Materials

The following table is an introduction to our more standard materials.

Elastomer Base ISO Abbreviation General Description
Acryl-Nitrile Butadiene NBR

Has good mechanical properties including a high wear resistance. NBR is available with varying percentages of Acryl-Nitrile, the higher the content the better the oil and fuel resistance. Conversely the elasticity, compression set and low temp flexibility are adversely affected.

Temp range: +100ºC (Short +120ºC) -20ºC (Special -50ºC)

Ethylene-Propylene

EPDM, EPM

Has good general properties, particularly useful for sealing against hydraulic fluids and Glycol based brake fluids.

Temp range: +150ºC (200 in Steam) -50ºC

Chloroprene

(Neoprene)

CR

Has good ozone, ageing, chemical and mechanical properties over a wide temperature range.

Temp range: +100ºC (Short +120ºC) –40ºC

Butyl

IIR

Has a low gas permeability rate and good electrical insulating properties.

Temp range: +130ºC -40ºC

Styrol-Butadiene

SBR

Predominately used in Tyre production, in seal applications is used for sealing non-mineral oil based brake fluid.

Temp range: +100ºC -50ºC

Silicone

Q, MQ, MVQ

In general have good heat resistance, cold flexibility, weathering and electrical insulating. Available in a wide range of compounds including food approved, flame retardant and WRC.

Temp range: +210ºC (Special 250ºC) –60ºC (Special –100ºC)

Fluorosilicone

MFQ

Has very similar properties to Silicone except increased resistance to fuel and mineral oil but with reduced hot air resistance.

Temp range: +175ºC (200ºC Max) –50ºC

Fluorocarbon

(Viton® fluoroelastomers)

FPM

Has excellent resistance to high temperatures, ozone, oxygen, mineral oil, synthetic hydraulic fluids, fuels, aromatics and many organic solvents and chemicals. A little let down by its low temp properties.

Temp range: +200ºC (Short 220ºC) –25ºC (-40ºC certain applications)

The above table highlights our more standard grades available in roll, sheet, and moulded, extruded and finished component. There are several more Elastomeric grades not listed above that are available in varying forms and information on these is available on request.

Below we offer greater depth of information on varying grades, hardness and relevant specifications such as BS, WRC, FDA and Flame retardant. We are in the process of compiling compatibility tables that we hope to list shortly.

NATURAL RUBBER
